Season 2023/24

Leeds United v Southampton Sunday 26th May 2024 - Wembley Stadium 2023/24 EFL Championship Play Off Final So, we have finally reached the end of our football season but not with the result we all wanted. After the stress of getting tickets and an 18-hour day leaving home at 4am this morning, the game at Wembley didn’t live up to our expectations. We came close to getting back into the game with a fantastic shot from James and I still feel that if we had equalised, we would have gone on to win the game. I said I hate the colour red, and it has come back to haunt us again but well done to Southampton for getting back up to the Premier League at the first attempt. We will have another season staying in the Championship but as fixtures will be out in three weeks, the Euros take place and once we know where our preseason tour will be held, it won’t be long before we are back on the terraces again. To be honest I didn’t feel disappointed at the end just resigned to us not winning another play off game. I did think it would be third time lucky with them having beaten us twice already this season, plus our lick had to change one day in the play offs. I think we could have done with having Collar back leading the fans today. We have over 200 songs and chants that we recorded for our CDs, and it would have been lovely to have lots of different ones sung today. Even though we had scarves put on our seats again today, we could not create that 12th man siege we had at Elland Road. We may have had a wall of noise, but we needed to be singing songs in my opinion. I was also sad that we never did a “one Don Revie chant” as it was the anniversary of his death today. I was privileged to have seen the greatest Leeds United team under his tenure and he and that team are why our worldwide fanbase is what it is today. I was touched to be told that I was a credit to Leeds United today because of what I do with my blogs and photos, so I want to say thank you for the compliment which is appreciated. Last week saw a BBC Radio Leeds interview on Tuesday morning, an appearance on Calendar Friday evening with my granddaughter, a telephone interview on the coach today with BBC Radio 5 Live and a zoom interview whilst in the pub with BBC London. I didn’t realise we were on the TV in the pub until afterwards. Team: Meslier, Ampadu, Rodon, Gray, Kamara, Rutter, Summerville, Gnonto, Firpo, Gruev, Piroe Subs: James for Gnonto (66), Roberts for Kamara (74), Anthony for Summerville (74), Joseph for Firpo (83) Subs not used: Darlow, Cooper, Byram, Shackleton, Gelhardt Attendance: 85,862 with 36,462 Leeds fans Referee: John Brooks Booked: Summerville, Ampadu Just as the teams came out the heavens opened with torrential rain, and we got soaked. It was lovely to see young Riley leading the team out as mascot and hopefully he had an amazing day. Southampton’s keeper was the first one called into action with a save from Gnonto and Meslier did well to push the ball away from a free kick. With their player in acres of space, I assumed their player was offside but with no replays etc. and no shouts from our players, I’m assuming one of out defenders played him onside. This turned out to be the only goal of the game. The second half saw Southampton try to double their lead before we brought on Dan James in place of Gnonto. With his shot hitting the upright and their keeper making a fingertip save in the dying moments of the game, what a fairytale ending that would have been for James if they’d have both gone into the net. Going to Wembley for the play offs has once again been a waste of time and money, despite the good day out with our fans. To me, that means that for next season the only way we will achieve promotion is for us to go up automatically, so we need to aim for being champions. Enjoy the summer break and thank you to everyone who loves reading my blogs and enjoys having their photos taken. LUFC – Marching on Together!

Leeds United v Norwich City Thursday 16th May 2024 - Elland Road, Leeds 2023/24 EFL Championship Play Off - Second Leg Wembley, Wembley, we’re the famous Leeds United and we’re off to Wembley! Well done lads, an amazing night supporting our team at Elland Road tonight and I’m still buzzing. A fantastic performance and one of the great nights to be there. Thank you to the fans for becoming the 12th man which is what I wanted! Before the game I was interviewed on Calendar along with my granddaughter, (was wanted by Look North too but ITV got there first). We had to go into the West Stand car park into Fullerton Park but luckily had no issues, as I wasn’t sure whether we would be allowed to go that way as it was through the Norwich fan zone. We still had a chance and as I said off camera, I was glad it was 0-0 from the first leg as I wouldn’t have wanted us to be too complacent if we were leading 1-0. There was some spirit in the second half at Carrow Road, which was good to see as it had been missing for a while. I wanted the team to shoot on sight of the goal and the fans to become the 12th man as there’s nothing better than being at Elland Road with an ecstatic crowd behind you. It was great talking to everyone before the game and also good to see Gilly and Sean from Australia and another lad from Greece in the Peacock. Also, a shout out to Paul who has supported Leeds United for 73 years! We went into the fanzone before the game to see Paul Wilson perform in memory of Rob Hiscoe who was killed recently. There was also an applause on 11 minutes for him in the ground which must have been touching for his family who were in the crowd. Rob raised over £16,000 for the NHS through lockdown, and I heard before the game that his organs were donated to save others too. He will be missed greatly by all those who knew him. Rest in Peace Rob and thoughts with your family and friends. As I tried to get into the ground using my season tickets thinking they’d been activated for the game, they wouldn’t work. As I couldn’t get onto my phone as there was no signal, I couldn’t look to find my email. Please note Leeds that we do need to have WIFI around the ground please, something that was great to have when we watched the U18s play at the Etihad last week. Luckily someone helped me out and thanks to them we got into the game. It wasn’t until later that I looked in my wallet and found I had downloaded the tickets after all!! You could say that with everything going on in the background with my husband’s terminal illness, that it has had an effect but I’m probably dozy too! He is due to have 5 sessions of radiotherapy to his main tumour shortly and he will then continue with immunotherapy. Hopefully the combined radiotherapy and immunotherapy with give him a bit more time. The club had put scarves out on everyone’s seats for the game and although some people thought they were tinpot and brought back bad memories of the Derby game, I was glad to see them so thank you! Team: Meslier, Ampadu, Gray, Rodon, Firpo, Gruev, Kamara, Rutter, Summerville, Gnonto, Piroe Subs: James for Gnonto (69), Roberts for Rutter (74), Joseph for Piroe (74), Anthony for Summerville (74), Cooper for Gruev (83). Subs not used: Darlow, Cresswell, Shackleton, Gelhardt Leeds won the game 4-0 with goals from Gruev (7), Piroe (20), Rutter (40), Summerville (68). Attendance: 36,384 with approx. 1,900 Norwich fans Referee: Jarred Gillett. Booked: Gruev, Rutter With the fans on fire as well as an electric atmosphere, Leeds got off to a fantastic start when Gruev hit a free kick straight into the net to give us an early lead. Obviously, the lads had listened to my advice pregame telling them to shoot on sight! Some fantastic play from Gray who was playing right back, saw him send a great pass to Gnonto. He ran forward then sent a fantastic cross into the box and Piroe doubled our lead as Elland Road went wild. Norwich nearly got straight back into the game as they counter attacked and got the better of Ampadu and were clean through with only Meslier to beat. He pulled off a stunning save to keep Norwich out and maintain our two-goal lead. That was a vital save from Meslier as it would have given them a chance to get back into the game. Leeds weren’t finished there as Piroe and Summerville with some lovely play down the left hand side, saw Piroe run to the edge of the box, pass it into the middle where their defender under pressure from Summerville, passed the ball into the path of Rutter to send a fantastic rising shot into the net to give us a three goal lead in the first half. Rutter nearly got another but was kept out by Norwich as we went into the break three goals to the good. There was a fantastic atmosphere below the stands as everyone was enjoying the moment. Gruev got his own song as Klich’s song was changed to 20 yards or 30 yards, Gruev is scoring goals. I was also told that the following songs should be changed too, Georgenius, rather than Georgino and Gnonto is better than Messi rather than mentioning a part of his body. I’ll admit I prefer to sing Messi anyway. The second half started off as explosive as the first and we were unlucky not to get a couple more goals. Another great move saw Summerville running forward in the middle this time. His pass to Gnonto saw him hit a low shot which their keeper fumbled, Firpo reacted quickly to get to the ball and pass it back into the middle for Summerville to get a fourth goal on the day. Leeds fans dared to sing Wembley, Wembley and que sera sera as Elland Road was bouncing. When the final whistle blew the ground was rocking and lots of us stayed in our seats to enjoy the moment for a long while. We eventually left to join family at Billy’s statue before making our way home. What a night, what a game and I absolutely loved it. See you at Wembley, LUFC – Marching on Together!

Norwich v Leeds United 12th May 2024 - Carrow Road, Norwich 2023/24 EFL Championship Play Off - First Leg Before I start my blog, I want to wish the Leeds fan who was attacked after the game today, a speedy recovery. According to his son “We came out of Carrow Road after the game to Chants of Turks with knives and Galatasary.. whilst asking the lads why it was said my dad was slashed in the neck with a blade and hit by a full can…” An horrendous and cowardly attack that has no place at football games. Two have been arrested in connection with this and they are looking for a third. After the carnival atmosphere at the start of the game, this was the last place I’d have expected anything like this to happen. The best way for “revenge” is for Leeds to beat them on the pitch on Thursday to get through to the final. When I arrived at Elland Road at 4.30am this morning, it was so deserted, I was beginning to think I’d got the time of the coach at 5.15am wrong. I hadn’t and we had a good run down and luckily, I slept most of the way there and back. Spare a thought for some of our Cornwall whites who left home at 1am showing fantastic commitment to support our team. It already felt like the season was over and when speaking to someone outside the ground, he said it felt like a pre-season friendly. With it being a gloriously hot day that sounded good to me as it meant no pressure. Historically, we’ve never done well in the play offs, but it has to change one day. Whether that is this year only time will tell. Team: Meslier, Ampadu, Rodon, Byram, Firpo, Gray, Rutter, Summerville, Gnonto, Gruev, Kamara Subs: Piroe for Rutter (79), Anthony for Gnonto (70), James for Summerville (87) Subs not used: Darlow, Cooper, Shackleton, Roberts, Joseph, Cresswell Leeds drew the game 0-0 Attendance: 26,982 -1,959 Leeds fans Referee: Josh Smith. Booked: Gnonto Leeds were attacking the goal in front of us in the first half. We had our hearts in our mouths a few times as we invited Norwich to attack us by playing deep and giving the ball away too easily. Farke had changed the formation of the team but it took a while before we settled into the game after misplaced passes before suddenly, we showed what we could do. With one touch passing, the ball ended up in the net courtesy of Firpo only to be disallowed for offside. It was a very tight decision by the linesman as when the ball was kicked Rutter was level with their defender on the far side, but he made a mockery of that in the second half when he wasn’t up with play twice and let Norwich play on. The second offside was way off but not given. With Norwich getting so many free kicks given for fouls, the referee came under fire from the Leeds fans especially as he’d played on when Gnonto was brought down on the edge of the box. Leeds did win a free kick and Summerville’s shot was put out for a corner. Gnonto had a good strike which was blocked and although Norwich had looked dangerous a few times, we went in on level terms at half time. The second half saw chances limited for both teams, but it was good to see the Leeds players find some fighting spirit again as it has been missing as of late. Keeping the scores level at full time means the second leg next Thursday gives us another chance to get to the final with another sell out crowd behind us. See what happens then.
